Crowns
A crown is a substitute for the enamel-covered part of a tooth. Crowns can improve your appearance and also help to keep the tooth structure strong. Crowns are usually made from one of the following materials: full porcelain, porcelain fused-to-metal, and all-metal.Why do I need a crown? The reasons vary. Here are a few: - You've had a root canal and your tooth needs protection. Teeth become much more brittle and can fracture leading to tooth loss. The crown protects the tooth.
- You need a bridge, so the teeth on either side have to be crowned so a bridge can be attached to them.
- You've cracked a tooth and there is not enough tooth structure left to do a restoration such as a silver or white filling.
- Your tooth is really discolored
- The filling material is showing more than the tooth, so the crown is used to cover it.
How long will it take to get my crown?
A minimum of two to three appointments. FIRST VISIT: - The tooth is prepared
- An impression or mold is made of the tooth
- A temporary crown is placed over the tooth to protect it until the next visit
- You may be numb from the local anesthetic for up to four hours, so be careful not to bite yourself when eating (after the appointment).
BETWEEN VISITS: - Continue to clean your teeth between visits
- A temporary cement is used so that the dentist can easily remove the tooth at the next visit. If the temporary tooth falls out for any reason, place it back onto the tooth immediately and call the dentist.
SECOND VISIT: - The temporary crown is removed
- Temporary cement is removed
- The permanent crown is fitted and adjusted
- The tooth is cleaned
- The crown is cemented into place.
AFTER CARE:- The crown may be sensitive to hot and cold temperatures for a few weeks.
- Any sensitivity should not be severe or extremely uncomfortable. If it is, contact your dentist.
