Immediate Dentures

An immediate denture is the process of fitting your mouth for dentures BEFORE your remaining (poor) teeth are extracted so that you don't have to go without teeth once your remaining teeth are extracted. An impression of your mouth is taken with your old teeth still in place.

  • Your new dentures will be put in immediately after your remaining teeth are extracted. This helps to keep swelling down.
  • You must wear your new immediate dentures continuously for three (3) days.
  • Complete healing will take about six (6) months. During that period of time the jaw bone will shrink and the denture will get very lose. The dentist will then manage this problem by applying softliners inside the denture to maintain comfort and proper fit until the shrinkage is complete in approximately six months. Then a permanent hard reline can be done.

Denture Relines

Denture Relining is basically the repair of old dentures so that new dentures don't have to be made. Relining is done to:

  • Increase the retention of old dentures
  • Increase the retention of new dentures that may have lost retention. Retention is generally lost due to the shrinkage of the jaw.

Denture Soft Liners

What is a soft liner and why did your dentist place it in your new denture(s)?

A soft liner is a temporary or permanent liner placed in an old or new denture to help condition the gums by absorbing the pressures of chewing.
