Root Canal
A root canal is the process of removing the infected or irritated nerve tissue which is inside of the root of a tooth. When the inside of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal may be necessary in order to save the tooth and avoid extraction. Root canals can be painless with the use of local anesthetic.
How can I tell if I might need a root canal?
- Your dentist will tell you
- Your tooth may be really sensitive to temperature (hot and cold)
- Your tooth may be really decayed
- You may feel a spontaneous pain or throbbing while biting.
Here are the steps of root canal:
- Local anesthetic is applied
- The dentist makes a small opening in the top of the tooth.
- The length of the canal is determined
- Infected pulp is removed
- The canal is reshaped
- The canal is prepared to accept the root canal filling material
- The root canal is sealed with rubber material called Gutta Percha and a sealer cement to
prevent reinfection.
- You may then need more visits if your tooth needs a crown.
