Losing a tooth or group of teeth as an adult is something we do not expect or desire. Unfortunately, tooth decay or injury can lead to tooth loss and leave an unsightly gap in your smile. Missing teeth can also compromise the overall health of your mouth. Without teeth in place to keep the bite aligned, misalignment issues can arise, teeth can cave in, and bone loss can occur. When your oral health is compromised, you are also prone to plaque buildup and tooth decay. Dr. Stephen D. Lipman knows the importance of replacing lost teeth, which is why, at his Windsor cosmetic dentistry practice, he recommends dental bridges to fill in gaps left by missing teeth.
Candidates for Dental Bridges
Not everyone who has experienced tooth loss is a good candidate for dental bridges. Patients who receive dental bridges need to have surrounding teeth that are healthy enough to support the bridge. Patients should also have good oral hygiene habits established so they will be prepared to care properly for the dental bridge. If the area is not kept clean, bacteria can enter the gums beneath the dental bridge and cause more problems down the road.
Dental Bridges Procedure
Dental bridges consist of one, solid center piece, known as the pontic, and two teeth that are used to anchor the bridge on either side of the gap of missing teeth. For our patients in Windsor, dental implants or dental crowns are used as anchors for dental bridges. These teeth are known as the abutment teeth. During your first dental bridge appointment, a cast will be made of the abutment teeth and a color will be chosen for the dental bridge that will blend in most naturally with your surrounding teeth. At this time, a temporary bridge may be placed while a permanent bridge is custom made for your mouth.
On your second trip to the dental office, your permanent bridge should be ready to be placed. Although the pontic is one solid piece, it will appear to be a natural set of one to three teeth. Dr. Lipman will assure that the fit of the dental bridge is correct and fits comfortably in your mouth. Finally, the dental bridge will be set into place.
Dr. Lipman also offers removable and bonded bridges. Dr. Lipman can answer any questions you may have about these options.
