What is Dental Bonding?

dental bondingDental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry treatment in which resin is used to refine the color, shape, and overall aesthetics of one or more teeth. In some cases, resin can be used to reinforce structurally compromised teeth. Unlike other cosmetic procedures, dental bonding does not involve enamel or tooth reduction. Since it is a non-invasive procedure, there is minimal preparation time involved and treatment can be completed in a single appointment.

During your initial consultation, you will discuss your cosmetic goals with Dr. Lipman and decide whether bonding is the appropriate treatment for you. Many patients decide to undergo teeth whitening prior to dental bonding in order to match the shade of the resin to their newly whitened smile.

The dental bonding process takes 30 to 60 minutes per tooth depending on the condition of your teeth and the scale of work being performed. During the procedure, we will lightly etch the surface of your teeth to help the resin bond to the tooth. Once in place, we will carefully sculpt the material to a natural-looking state and use a curing light to harden the resin. We will then trim away any excess material and make adjustments if necessary.

Dental bonding is a cost-effective, convenient, and reliable procedure that can address multiple minor cosmetic concerns in a single treatment.

What Issues Can Bonding Address?

Patients who are considering dental bonding should remember that this cosmetic treatment is intended to address minor aesthetic flaws. If you have severely damaged teeth, restorative procedures are also available through our practice.

Chipped or Cracked Teeth

Bonding can improve the aesthetics of a chipped or cracked tooth. Dr. Lipman will carefully apply and shape the resin to restore symmetry to your smile.

Discolored Teeth

Intrinsic stains can be caused by injury or infection. Intrinsic stains are not usually responsive to traditional whitening treatment. Dental bonding can help conceal intrinsic stains and whiten your smile.

Misshapen Teeth

If you have an irregularly sized tooth, a tooth that is too short, or a peg-shaped tooth, dental bonding can help match it to your surrounding smile. Your teeth can look straighter, larger, and more proportionate in one treatment.

Dental Bonding vs. Other Cosmetic Procedures

Dental bonding can be an alternative to porcelain veneers for patients who are on a budget, or those who would like to try a more affordable treatment before committing to veneers. The process is also less invasive than veneers placement because it does not involve reduction of your tooth or enamel. Since bonding is an additive procedure, it can be reversed.

In order to help you achieve a comprehensive cosmetic enhancement, dental bonding can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures as part of a smile makeover
