Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers are color-matched to your teeth in order to ensure the most natural-looking results possible.

How Do Porcelain Veneers Work?

Essentially, veneers are thin ceramic shells that are affixed to the surface of the teeth. Each veneer is custom-made from tooth-colored material to cover imperfections in your smile. Once the wafer-thin shells are bonded into place, they can transform the color, shape, size, and length of your teeth. Dental ceramic mimics the qualities of natural teeth to provide a lifelike and beautiful result.

Dr. Lipman can use veneers to address a wide range of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Severe discoloration which does not respond to teeth whitening
  • Worn enamel which makes teeth appear dull
  • Gaps or spacing issues
  • Uneven teeth
  • Chips or cracks
  • Irregularly shaped teeth

Veneers can cover a single tooth to conceal an isolated issue or be placed on multiple teeth to enhance the appearance of your entire smile.

Why Should You Get Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are extremely beneficial for the enhancement of one’s smile. Our custom veneers are:

  • Compatible with other cosmetic and restorative dental treatments
  • A quick alternative to braces to correct crooked teeth
  • Natural-looking and lifelike
  • More stain-resistant than natural teeth
  • A comprehensive cosmetic option
  • More conservative than dental crowns

Dr. Lipman can also combine veneers with other cosmetic procedures to create a customized smile makeover treatment plan. A makeover can address a wide range of cosmetic concerns simultaneously for a dramatically enhanced smile.

Are Veneers Right for Me?

The best way to find if porcelain veneers can help your smile is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Lipman. He can examine your smile and discuss all of your options with you before recommending veneers.

One of the many benefits of porcelain veneers is that the treatment does not involve an extensive recovery period.

There are certain factors which can limit your ability to receive porcelain veneers. Generally, Dr. Lipman does not recommend veneers for patients with:

  • Thin enamel: For your veneers to be successful, they need to bond with your enamel. If your enamel is too thin to support them, you may not qualify.
  • Poor oral health: As with any cosmetic treatment, you should address oral health issues before receiving veneers. Dr. Lipman can address any tooth decay, uncontrolled gum disease, or other health issues before placing your veneers.
  • Bruxism: Clenching or grinding your teeth can damage the porcelain. If you have other oral fixations, such as biting your nails, you may not qualify for veneers.
  • Severe misalignment: While veneers can conceal minor gaps and misalignments, severely misaligned teeth may require orthodontic treatment.

If you are interested in veneers, you should also be ready to commit to a consistent dental hygiene routine. For patients who do not qualify for porcelain veneers, Dr. Lipman can recommend alternatives, such as teeth whitening or dental bonding

The Treatment Process

For most patients, receiving porcelain veneers involves three stages:

  • Consultation: During your initial visit, our dentist will evaluate your smile and ask about your goals to determine whether this treatment is right for you. If it seems appropriate, he will then calculate the ideal size and shape of veneers for your individual smile.
  • Preparation: Preparing your teeth for veneers involves cleaning and resurfacing the tooth. A thin strip of enamel will need to be removed from the assigned teeth, after which a mold of the teeth will be made. This impression will need to be sent to the lab in order to customize your ceramic shells. Because the crafting of your actual veneers can take about a week, it may be necessary for Dr. Lipman to provide you with protective temporary restorations.
  • Placement: Once your porcelain veneers are ready, a member of our staff will ask you back to our practice. Our dentist will use a bonding material to meticulously adhere each veneer to the appropriate tooth, and then utilize a special light to harden the material. Soon enough, your smile will be remarkably made over!

Caring for Your Veneers

One of the many benefits of porcelain veneers is that the treatment does not involve an extensive recovery period. In fact, once your veneers are in place, you can return to your normal life with little to no disruption. You can also continue caring for your teeth as you normally would. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and attend regular cleanings and exams at our office.

Veneers can cover a single tooth to conceal an isolated issue or be placed on multiple teeth to enhance the appearance of your entire smile.

Keep in mind that chipped veneers will have to be replaced. However, there are some steps you can take to protect your veneers and improve their longevity. To prolong the life of your veneers, you should:

  • Avoid biting or chewing on hard objects
  • Refrain from using your teeth as tools, such as to open or tear packages
  • Use a non-abrasive toothpaste
  • Brush your teeth after consuming stain-producing foods, such as red wine or coffee

Dr. Lipman will also typically advise against eating certain foods that can damage your veneers. If you clench or grind your teeth, we recommend investing in a night guard to reduce the wear and tear on your veneers.
