Dental discoloration can make an otherwise beautiful smile appear unhealthy. Even the most diligent patients may find that environmental factors, dietary choices, and the passage of time eventually take a toll on the aesthetics of their teeth. At our Windsor, CT practice, Dr. Stephen D. Lipman offers Zoom!® whitening for patients looking to eliminate discoloration on their teeth and brighten their smile by several shades.
What Causes Dental Staining?
Most dental staining is often triggered by dark-colored foods and beverages in the standard American diet. This includes:
- Red wine
- Tomato sauce
- Fruit juice
- Soy sauce
Tobacco products can also cause significant staining. Smoking can contribute to an increased accumulation of plaque and tartar, making the teeth not only less healthy, but also less appealing.
Whitening your teeth at the office is a simple and convenient treatment.
How Zoom! In-Office Whitening Works
Zoom! teeth whitening can typically be completed in less than one hour at our office. A typical treatment includes:
- Preparing the teeth: Before bleaching your teeth, your hygienist will perform a thorough dental cleaning. This will remove any debris, plaque, food particles, and bacteria so the whitening gel can adhere to the teeth properly.
- Applying the gel: Next, a protective barrier is placed over your gums. The clinician then applies the concentrated whitening gel to the teeth. All surfaces must be covered evenly for optimal results.
- Allowing the gel to work: Generally, the whitening gel is left on the teeth for about 10 to 15 minutes. During this time, the gel is activated by a special blue light. The oxygen molecules in the concentrated gel break apart the chemical bonds that produce staining. Once the allotted time has passed, the gel will be rinsed off and reapplied. This process is typically repeated three times, with full results becoming apparent in about one hour.
In-Office Whitening vs. Store-Bought Kits
There is certainly no shortage of teeth whitening products. Gels, strips, rinses, and pastes can be found in any oral health aisle across the country. However, it is important to understand that these products may actually be harmful to your enamel. In fact, just because an item is sold over-the-counter does not mean it has been properly tested. As a general rule, dentist-supervised whitening treatments are preferred over store-bought kits to maintain optimal oral health. However, if you still prefer to whiten your teeth yourself, be sure to select a product that has the American Dental Association’s Seal of Approval.

How to Maintain Your Brilliant New Smile
After Zoom! whitening, there are a few measures patients can take to maintain their dazzling results. First, it is important to consume dark-colored foods and beverages in moderation. In addition, try sipping tea, coffee, and cola through a straw. This will decrease the amount of time the liquid is in contact with the teeth.
Additionally, patients should adhere to proper oral hygiene practices. This includes committing to routine dental examinations and cleanings. Between visits, you should brush at least twice a day and floss once daily. We recommend waiting about 30 minutes to brush your teeth after meals. Brushing too soon can actually harm the enamel by rubbing harmful sugars into the teeth. To wash away irritants, rinse your mouth with water after eating.
